Who is Ava-Mae?
“Art has never been about the artist, it’s always been about the art...”
This video was never meant to happen. About a week ago, a friend (vanessa_urrego) asked me to collaborate with a friend of hers on a special project. While on the phone with Vanessa I wasn't sure if I would be able to do this because of conflicting schedules and "life" in general, yet without really thinking about it I said "sure". The moment I hung up, I somewhat regretted my decision...this meant more work and less sleep.
I remember showing up to a dead-end street next to the bay at Biscayne Boulevard around 10pm. There was a beautiful mural with a set of red lips and a road coming out of it. I remember getting right to work, as Ava & Vanessa began prepping the sidewalk.
As Ava laid the tape, she began sharing her heart and the reason why she creates and what "art" means to her. It didn't take long to recognize that Ava was a voice and not just an echo. A voice is not easily shut down...and she proved this when the local authorities showed up and told her she couldn't finish her piece. With a little bit of caution and diligence, she was able to finish it.
I am extremely grateful Ava accepted to do this interview and share her message with the world.
